Scar removal is a much debated topic.  Many people claim you need surgery or laser treatment to remove a scar.  Others think you need an expensive scar cream.  The net is also full of home remedies and old wives tales.  So what is the best way to get rid of scars?

Many people think you can’t get rid of scars without an expensive scar removal surgery or laser treatment.  These procedures sometimes involve dermabrasion, chemical peels, or re-opening a cut and stitching it shut.  These procedures are costly and also risky.  Most doctors won’t even perform on a scar unless it is over a year old and highly visible.  Even then, its risky and has a chance to worsen scarring.

Designer Scar Creams

There are several designer scar products out there.  Many of them are just expensive cocktails of Vitamin E, moisturizers, sunscreen, and other gimmicks.  They almost never deliver results like you expect.  Vitamin E and onion extract (Mederma) have both been proven ineffective in several medical trials.  Silicone is perhaps the only designer scar product with any promise.

The net is jam packed with ridiculous home remedies from scars.  They range from fruits, vegetables, oils, Vitamin E, lotions, and patches.  If you do some research, you’ll see that nearly none of these products are effective for scar treatment.  There are a very select few that do work, and even then they must be used properly to get results.  Always use caution when applying any topical product to the skin, as it can cause irritation and worsen scarring in some cases.  Vitamin E for instance causes contact dermatitis in many people.
